Hats are fun!

Today has been really fun. I’m getting the hang of hats. A friend sent one in the mail, so I tried it on and it prompted the picture with the black hat. The floppy hat I bought in Hawaii when I was losing hair and needed to be prepared, so I’m glad to get to wear it. The pink one is the first had, that my friend Jo brought to me in Hawaii. She is also a breast cancer survivor, so she’s been my coach from since before I even had breast cancer. So, this is the beginning of the hat show. You’ll see that, as time goes on I’ll get better with the hats.

I copied the sleep hat that they gave me at MD Anderson and made a white one that fits me better. Then I rummaged through my button jar and found buttons to decorate my hats. I also found some hair decorations that the girls had when they were little and I’ll use them to decorate my hats. This is so fun.

Beside that I gained a new respect for the electric razor today! I always loved to keep my legs slippery smooth, but with that came lots of nicks. Nicks are out of the question, now, because of danger of infection, so the ‘safety razor’ is also out of the question. Don’s mom had an electric razor and we’ve got a couple of extra bathrooms or I would have tossed it a long time ago. I plugged it in and found that it’s a cool little job! It won’t get my legs as smooth as a safety razor, but it won’t cut me, either! Wouldn’t you think the hair on my legs would fall out? No such luck, yet! (Those whiskers on my chin aren’t back, though!) Anyway, I used the razor on my head and I love how it smoothed out my head! I’ve been rubbing my head all day and I’m getting so hooked on it. This is way cool. I may freeze in the winter, but it’s a great summer ‘do!’

Don has been calling me Baby Grammy all day. I may have a new nickname.

Today was bandage-changing day, so I got up early and walked with Don this morning. It was nice and cool, so I didn’t sweat too much. Even if I did sweat it would have been okay because we were changing the bandage anyway. It felt good to walk and then to get cleaned up, including the bandage. Every other day I have to wrap my arm in plastic and tape it up before I bathe. That’s a real claustrophobic operation for me, so it feels really good to get the bandage changed, even though it’s a real uncomfortable maneuver. Punching around and rubbing alcohol and iodine on the stitches and where the PICC goes into my arm are no fun. Checking to see that all is well in there is encouraging, though.

So today I’m giving thanks for hats, fun decorations, a great old electric razor from a dear mother-in-law, a good walk, and a clean, new bandage, as well as wonderful family and friends! God bless!

  3. Hello and congratulations for bringing the hat show to all. I just enjoyed looking at them and scroll and look some more. Your Sweet Sister is just awesome to keep me informed of church news that I cannot understand even when I am right there and now for the update on your Dr. visit and that sounds just great. You do look great in all of the hats. I am glad I don't have to judge the one that is the most becoming but like Ruthie and Terrie, the pink one is a real cutie. The black one is so dressy looking. You could win a beauty contest with anyone of them. God is so Good! He answers prayers and I don't have to tell you that!! Just know there are so many going up in your behalf from all of us. Keep up the positive thinking that helps us all keep on keeping on!
You will always be a beatiful lady inside and out!! Thanks!

  4. Hey, Ruthie. I'm really having fun with the hats. Each day inspiration hits me and I do something different. I figure there are no rules about hats and decorations, so I'm having fun! People are so cute the way they respond to my hats. They give me even more blessings to count. It's nice when total strangers can be so fun.

One of the great things for me about getting a breast cancer diagnosis is how it jerks me into NOW and COUNTING the good mode. I find myself thinking back to Mom when she had it and others, too. I wish I had been more supportive. It's so great how people rally around. I'm really loving it and seeing so many blessings that I took for granted for 58 years.

We sure love and miss you!

  5. Hi, Terri, the pink hat is so fun and easy. I just plop it on and go. I love the pink, too.

I'm counting you all the time and that awesome singing voice. I treasure lots of memories singing with you, starting with Branson and including singing with you and O'Marie.

    Love you,

    Sissy

  6. Thank you Dot! My mother told me that one time she was scolded when she was little because she had announced in front of people, "I'm pretty." She said her parents told her that was indeed pretty, but it was a characteristic that other people should say to her and she should say to others, but if you say it about yourself then it takes away from your inner beauty which is more important. That made a big impression on me so I always wanted to work more on inner beauty than outward beauty. I figure that God makes us all beautiful and it's up to us to grow the inside qualities to go with the outside to compliment the outside. He makes it all, so it's our job to keep it pure.

Besides, beauty comes in so many looks that I have always been confused as to what outward beauty really is. I find people who look radically different to be drop dead gorgeous. I think it's because I think they are beautiful outwardly more because of how I perceive their inside beauty to be.

Anyway, it's a real compliment to me when you say I am beautiful on the inside and outside. Coming from you it means a lot, too. I think my mom would be pleased that you say that about her baby.

Thank you so much for your love, prayers and encouraging words.

    Love,

    Jo
